Founded in antiquity on a rocky headland overlooking the Seuil du Poitou, between the Boivre and Clain rivers, yesteryear’s Roman Lemonum became capital of the Pictons. Down the centuries, Poitiers developed along a checkerboard pattern, still to be found in the layout of the city’s downtown area. Often victim of barbarian invasions, the city walled itself in.
Christianity enters the Poitou in the IVth Century: The Saint-Jean-de-Poitiers Baptistery is considered the most ancient witness of the dawn of the Christian era in Europe. Popular imagination immediately associates. Poitiers to the Great Battles, whether against Visigoths or Arabs, which bring to mind the famous names of Clovis, king of the Franks, and of Charles Martel.
HERITAGE HALL
A permanent exhibition that unlocks the mysteries of the city, encouraging you to discover and understand it. This presentation considers the city as a whole, from its origins and formation to its current appearance.
The idea here is to allow the city to meet its inhabitants and its tourists, offering the general public an extra dose of emotion and knowledge.
NOTRE-DAME-LA-GRANDE CHURCH
Located within the fortified walls that have surrounded the city since the IVth Century, bordering a main street and sitting near a feudal castle, Notre Dame has a past which recent discoveries and restoration works allow to understand better. During the Xth Century, a Father Launon is the abbot of the canons of "Sancta Maria Maior" (the name follows that of Rome’s famous Marian church). The church must have been built on the site of the current one. It was rebuilt in the XIth Century; the chevet, most of the nave and the bell tower are from this era. Upon its completion, in 1086, it was dedicated by the future Pope Urban II.
SAINT PIERRE CATHEDRAL
Started in the latter half of the XIIth Century, probably around 1155, it was doubtless financed by the bishop and his chapter (the clergy assisting the bishop), but perhaps also by the Duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor, and her husband, Henry II Plantagenet, by then King of England, as well as by the community of the faithful. Construction lasted a long time, because the church was only definitely consecrated on 17 October 1379.
