The fact that many visitors wish to stay in Limoges after their journey is partially due to the services it offers as a region capital in the heart of a 230 000 inhabitants employment pool. But most people appreciate also the quality of life you can still find in Limoges that is lost in the big cities.
The Cathedral, a gothic masterpiece:
This imposing structure impresses Limoges urban landscape. Located in the ancient town of the Cité, the Saint-Etienne Cathedral hulks one of the 2 historical districts of Limoges.
The cathedral of Limoges is one of the rare gothic monuments located south of the Loire, where Roman art is usually chosen.
Saint-Martial and Saint-Etienne bridges:
Originally, a ford was built to cross the Vienne, a tumultuous stream. The Romans built a bridge of stones which bases can be seen on the Saint-Martial bridge, reconstructed in the 13th century.
To give access to the Episcopal Cité, the Saint-Etienne bridge was risen during the 13th century, allowing the Saint-Jacques pilgrims to directly reach the Cité.
The Halles – food market:
Inspired by the machinery gallery built for the 1878 Universal Exhibition, the Halles were opened in 1889. A porcelain frieze runs on its external walls, detailing all the victuals of this cradle of food related professions.
